my life through music

At the risk of sounding cliché by referencing The Nightmare Before Christmas, Fiona Apple’s cover of Danny Elfman’s “Sally’s Song” serves as a perfect example of everything I love about music: it’s emotive, flowing and experiential. Several instrumental voices seemingly dance around one another while still retaining an overall sense of harmonic unity. (The string descension at 2:28 is particularly powerful…)

I can’t say I’m a huge fan of many of the things she’s done (including David Blaine), but there’s always been something about Fiona Apple that I found irresistible. Her sultry contralto voice and impressive displays of musicianship provide an effective vessel for a seemingly tortured soul. I don’t know why I like complicated people. They’re just more interesting, I guess.

Not to say she’s my type or anything… Please don’t go rushing out to your local methadone clinic to find me a burnt-out hippie for a girlfriend.
